Secretary-1 inspects arrangements for National Convention

Yangon, 3 Oct—Chairman of the National Convention Convening Commission Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Thein Sein yesterday morning inspected arrangements for the National Convention to be reconvened on 10 October 2006 at Nyaunghnapin Camp in Hmawby Township, Yangon Division.

The Secretary-1, together with Lt-Gen Myint Swe of the Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin, Vice-Chairman of the National Convention Convening Management Committee Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, and member of the NCC Work Committee Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, was welcomed at the camp by officials of the NCC Work Committee and Management Committee and chairmen of respective subcommittees and officials concerned.

The Secretary-1 inspected the preparations made in Pyidaungsu Hall and gave instructions to the officials.

He also looked into the meeting hall of the NCCC at Anawrahta Yeiktha, the dining hall of Bagan hostel and the dining hall for the staff, the office of the invitation and reception subcommittee, hostels of female delegates and male delegates, mess (1), GEC shop, Win Thuzar shop of the Ministry of Industry-1, Maung Chit store and tailoring shop, Sarpay Beikman book shop, Myanma spectacles shop, the office of the Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, Padetha restaurant, Daing Khin Khin bookstore, TM store, and the barber shop of the Border Trade Department. Next, he inspected the gymnasium, golf training range, and Nyaunghnapin station hospital. Officials concerned conducted them round the camp.

The NCCC Chairman gave instructions to the officials on fulfillment of the requirements for the convenience of the NC delegates.

Shan State (North)’s delegates to NC arrive

Yangon, 3 Oct — Delegates to the National Convention from Shan State (North) arrived here by air today to participate in the National Convention.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Invitation and Accomodation Sub-Committee of National Convention Convening Management Committee Col Htein Linn and members of the sub-committee. The delegates were conveyed to Nyaunghnapin Camp in Hmawby Township where the National Convention will be reconvened.

Myanmar’s internal affairs using UN as a tool

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — The Karenni National Democratic Party (KNDP), on 30 September, issued declaration on its stance on the decision to put Myanmar on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council.

1. Due to the submission of the permanent US representative to the UN that Myanmar situation was posing a threat to regional stability and peace, a decision was made on 15 September 2006 to put Myanmar on the agenda of the UNSC.

2. The Karenni National Democratic Party (KNDP) (Naga Group) has returned to the legal fold and has been taking part in regional development drives in Kayah State hand in hand with the government. As a result, such fruitful result of peace as development in the region, community peace and tranquillity and educational development among youth are being witnessed.

3. Peace prevails throughout the country and there can be seen developments in various regions to some extent like our state. Therefore, there is no reason to believe that Myanmar is posing a threat to regional stability.

4. Moreover, we believe the enduring State Constitution will emerge in the near future as the National Convention is in progress with all strata of life.

5. Therefore, KNDP hereby declares that it condemns and protests against the act of the United State as it is merely interference in Myanmar's internal affairs using the UN as a tool.

Special Refresher Course No 7 for faculty members opens

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — A ceremony to open Special Refresher Course No 7 for faculty members of universities and colleges was held at the Yadana Hall of the Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division yesterday morning. On behalf of Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Thein Sein, Minister for Education Dr Chan Nyein delivered an address.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Soe Naing, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Phone Zaw Han, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Aung Myo Min, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Kyaw Soe, members of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, departmental heads, Rector of CICS (Upper Myanmar) U Aung Hsan Win, and the heads of department, course instructors and trainee faculty members.

On behalf of Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Thein Sein, Minister for Education Dr Chan Nyein said that it is incumbent upon the education sector to contribute its shares in bringing about national development and putting the national interest on the right track. All round development is to be realized through the strenuous efforts of intellectuals and intelligentsia.

Efforts are to be made on the basis of the education sector for development of such sectors as agriculture, farming, industry, production, commerce, transport, management and services to be in line with the advancement of science and technology.

The government has laid down and is systematically imple-menting the national education promotion plan for uplift of the education standards of the entire nation and for the emergence of a constant learning society. Tasks and duties of the education sector of today is immense and extensive. That is why all the faculty members are to make relentless efforts for national development through the education sector.

To bring about national development and strong national economy, to meet the food, clothing and shelter needs of the people and to enhance the education, economic and social standards, the government has laid down political, economic and social objectives and is implementing them. In doing so, it has laid down and is implementing national projects at the respective sectors. As a result, different parts of the nation are seeing remarkable development.

Thanks to prevalence of peace and stability coupled with national unity and strong national economy, the country is in the process of transition to democracy.

Based on the fine traditions of today’s prevailing situation, all are to march towards the goal enlisting the strength of people in the country.

While facing interference in internal affairs and countering the disturbances of other countries and building and defending the country with the strength of people, faculty members and people are also to safeguard and promote the integrity of the nation.

It is the duty of the faculty members to nurture intellectuals and intelligentsia who can promote and safeguard the country’s interests.

In conclusion, the minister urged faculty members to strive for the promotion of education standard as part of an effort for perpetuation of the State as a sovereign nation and to participate in implementing the tasks for emergence of a peaceful, modern, developed and discipline-flourishing democratic nation with Union Spirit and Patriotic Spirit.

After the opening ceremony, the minister cordially greeted the trainees. A total of 874 faculty members of universities and colleges in Upper Myanmar are attending the four-week course.

USDA Annual General Meeting held in Pathein

Yangon, 2 Oct — Ayeyawady Division Union Solidarity and Development Association held its annual general meeting for 2006 at Pathein City Hall this morning.

Present on the occasion were Patron of the division USDA Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung, CEC member of USDA Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Daw Than Than Nwe, wife of the Commander Chairperson of Supervisory Committee for Ayeyawady Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association, secretary of Ayeyawady Division USDA U Than Tun and executives, secretaries of district and township USDAs and members, members of social organizations and wellwishers.

First, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung made a speech on the occasion. Minister Col Thein Nyunt also made a speech on the occasion.

Next, the commander and the minister gave prizes to outstanding students who won distinctions in the matriculation examination for 2006 academic year. Afterwards, the minister accepted a total of 6563 membership applications for USDA.

Construction Minister looks into roads, bridges in Chin State

Yangon, 3 Oct — Accompanied by responsible personnel of Public Works, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun inspected maintenance of roads and bridges on Kalay-Thaingngin-Hpalan-Haka on 29 September and arrived at Thaingngin at mile post 31/0.

At the briefing hall, Chin State Superintending Engineer U Ngwan Hsan Aung briefed the minister on maintenance of the roads, removal of landslide, preparations for drains and conduit pipes and paving the tarred roads.

In response to the reports, the minister gave necessary instructions to engineers and inspected construction tasks of the roads with the use of heavy machinery.

On his way to Haka, the minister also inspected roadwork and bridges along the road.

Auditors hold coord meeting

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — The work coordination meeting of state and division auditors was held at Auditor-General’s Office here yesterday with an address by Auditor-General Maj-Gen Lun Maung.

It was attended by Deputy Auditor General Daw Thin Thin, Director-General U Myo Myint of Auditor-General’s Office, deputy directors-general, directors and auditors.

In his opening address, Auditor-General Maj-Gen Lun Maung urged officials to observe rules and regulations in examining annual financial accounts of ministries and to do justice to financial examination.

Maj-Gen Lun Maung awarded the outstanding auditors and Deputy Auditor-General Daw Thin Thin awarded children of employees of audit offices who passed the matriculation examination for 2005-06 academic year with distinctions. At the meeting, auditors reported on examination of financial accounts of government departments in 2006 and implementation of the tasks laid down in the previous meeting.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Lun Maung.

Athletes of Ministry of Finance and Revenue honoured

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — Footballers of Myanmar football team that won the Merdeka Cup and outstanding athletes were honoured at the Ministry of Finance and Revenue here on 1 October.

Present were Minister for Finance and Revenue Maj-Gen Hla Tun and wife Daw Khin Than Win, Deputy Minister Col Hla Thein Swe, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, officials and athletes.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Tun spoke on the occasion.

The minister, his wife and officials presented gifts to six footballers who took part in the 38th Merdeka Cup and outstanding athletes. Next, Soe Myat Min, the captain of the Myanmar football team, spoke words of thanks and dinner was hosted.

Filling station in Pakokku inspected

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi inspected storage and distribution of fuel at the storage and distribution branch of Myanma Petroleum Products Enterprise in Pakokku on 1 October.

Branch manager reported on storage and distribution of fuel. The minister gave instructions on capacity of fuel tanks and transport system , and inspected fuel tanks and measures undertaken for security and fire prevention.

He also inspected No 0352 filling station in Pakokku.

Commander, CEC member attend AGM, ceremony to open USDA’s new office

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — Bago Division Union Solidarity and Development Association opened its new office in conjunction with alms donation ceremony in Toungoo yesterday.

Present on the occasion were Kyarnikan Monastery Presiding Sayadaw Agga Maha Ganthavasaka Pandita Bhaddanta Suriya and members of the Sangha, Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Ko Ko, CEC member of USDA Minister for Rail Transportation Maj-Gen Aung Min, Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Col Thein Tun of Southern Command, secretary of Bago Division USDA U Saw Maw Tun, joint-secretary U Nyi Nyi Myint and executives, members and outstanding students.

First, CEC member of USDA Minister for Rail Transportation Maj-Gen Aung Min formally opened the new office while Commander
Maj-Gen Ko Ko unveiled the signboard of the office.

Next, Commander Maj-Gen Ko Ko and Minister Maj-Gen Aung Min made speeches on the occasion. Afterwards, the commander and the minister gave prizes to organizers, participants who supported in rural development tasks and outstanding students.

Afterwards, they attended a ceremony to present membership applications, extended greetings and accepted membership applications on the occasion.

Coord meeting of Myanma Insurance held

Yangon, 3 Oct — The second coordination meeting of Myanma Insurance (Head Office) and States/Divisions/Districts Insurance Offices under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue for 2006-07 was held at the meeting hall of its headoffice this morning, attended by Managing Director U Thein Lwin of Myanma Insurance and officials.

The managing director made an opening address and officials from States/Divisions/Districts Insurance Offices submitted second-four monthly reports to the meeting. Officials concerned made supplementary reports. The coordination meeting continues tomorrow.

Deputy Minister for PBANRDA arrives back

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — The Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Tin Ngwe arrived back here by air on 2 October after attending the second ASEAN Plus Three High-level Workshop on Poverty Eradication held at Beijing, the People’s Republic of China, from 25 to 29 September.

The meeting was attended by represen-tatives of ASEAN Plus Three and Asian Development Bank.

The deputy minister acted as the member of the Panel of Chairmen at the second session of the meeting and reported on poverty eradication tasks being carried out in Myanmar.

Director U Aye Lwin of Progress of Border Areas and National Races Development Department also arrived back here on the same flight.

Heroin, stimulant tablets worth K 1,877.82 million seized in Tachilek Township

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 Oct — An army unit led by an officer of the local battalion that is discharging security duty in Shan State (East) on their way back to Tachilek yesterday bumped into two suspicious-looking persons each riding a motorcycle near Adee village, and intercepted them.

The two managed to escape crossing a nearby river. However, the authorities who were in hot pursuit of the two found a bag hidden in bushes. Contained in the bag were 67 blocks of heroin weighing 45 kilos mingled with rice and 520 stimulant tablets bearing “WY” letters. The worth of seized heroin is estimated at K 1,876 million and stimulant tablets at K 1.82 million.

Group of Nationalities Affairs holds educative talks

Yangon, 3 Oct — An educative talk, organizied by Group of Nationalities Affairs of Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation was held at the central training school of education and training department under the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs in Dagon Myothit (North) yesterday.

Present on the occasion were leader of group of Nationalities Affairs Daw Kyin Khine and responsible personnel of MWAF Headquarters. A total of 233 nationals attended the talks.

First, leader of group of Nationalities Affairs Daw Kyin Khine talked on salient points of the federation. Next, Professor of History Department Dr Daw Aye Aye Ngon also discussed salient points of traditional cultures of Chin nationals.

Workshop on Rural Energy Technologies held

Yangon, 3 Oct—Workshop on Rural Energy Technologies jointly sponsored by the Myanmar Engineering Association and the Energy Planning Department of the Ministry of Energy was held at the MEA building on Hlaing Campus this morning.

Chairman of MEA U Than Myint, Director-General of the Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) of India Dr RK Pachauri and Director of EPD U Aye Kyaw made speeches on the occasion.

Next, Resource Person Mr Sunil Dhingra of TERI presented paper on Biomass Energy Technology: Potential and Opportunities, Rural Electrification Through Biomass Gasifier, Resource Person U Tun Naing Aung of MEA paper on Biomass Gasifire in Myanmar, Resource Person Daw Mi Sanda Mon paper on Recent Researches in Biomass Gasifier and Resource Person U Tin Nyein paper on Co Generation By Biogasifier For Biodiesel Processing and replied to queries raised by those present.

It was also attended by Indian Ambassador Mr Bhaskar Kumar Mitra, executives of MEA, members of MEA and guests.

Floral Arrangement Course concludes

Yangon, 3 Oct — Floral Arrangement Course No 1/2006 of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association concluded today at Multi-purpose Building of MMCWA here.

At the concluding ceremony, CEC member of MMCWA Daw Htwe Htwe Nyunt delivered an closing address and President of MMCWA Daw Khin Khin Win presented certificates to trainees through a representative. Trainees donated cash to Childhood Development Centre of MMCWA through Secretary of MMCWA Daw Wai Wai Tha. A total of 27 trainees attended the course. After the ceremony, the Chairperson of MMCWA and party viewed floral arrangements of the trainees.

Miss Royal gold soap 2006 contest and prize presentation ceremony held

Yangon, 3 Oct — The final contest and prize presentation ceremony of Miss Royal gold soap 2006 organized by Excel Co Ltd, mainly sponsored by Royal gold Soap and co-sponsored by JOHN Co Ltd, Ko Ko Beauty Salon and Lolane took place at Excel Treasure Restaurant on 30 September. Altogether 400 contestants partici-pated in the contest.

Seven Myanmar students win scholarships of PSB Academy

Yangon, 3 Oct — PSB Academy of Singapore and New castle University of Australia presented scholarships award worth S $ 205,000 to seven Myanmar students at Sedona Hotel here on 25 September.

The ceremony was organized by OEC Educational Services in Yangon.

The scholarships
were awarded for four-year electronic engi-neering course at the PSB Academy in Singapore and it is recognized by engineering societies in Singapore and Australia. Myanmar scholarship award winners are Ma Seinn Mya Aye, Ma Shan Lun Kyein, Maung Wai Moe Kyaw, Maung Khine Zaw Lwin, Maung Zeyar Lin, Ma Tin Nwe Aye and Maung Nay Myo Han.

Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore Mr Robert Chua and Senior Vice-President and Principal of PSB Academy Ms Lee Beng Choo presented the scholarships to the students.
